VIEWPOINTS
CORNWALL there are accessible viewpoints at many coastal properties such as Bodigga Cliff near Looe, Nare Head and St Anthony Head. Estate walks at Lanhydrock, alongside the River Fowey, and at Godolphin are suitable for wheelchair users.
DEVON the upgraded path from Salcombe Hill car park gives magnificent views over Sidmouth; Plym Bridge Woods has gates fitted with RADAR locks and a wheelchair-accessible fishing platform. There is access at Hartland Moor along Hartland Way to an adapted bird hide.
DORSET, a gentle slope gives easy access from the car park down to the shingle beach at Burton Bradstock; a summer boardwalk leads onto the beach at Studland, and Stonebarrow Hill at Golden Cap has marvellous views (and an adapted WC). Nearby Langdon Hill Wood has a circular forest route suitable for powered vehicles (access either via kissing-gates or gates with RADAR locks).
SOMERSET Two easy access trails have been created on the Holnicote Estate in Somerset, at North Hill and at Webbers Post, offering fine views over moorland, woodland and coast. Leigh Woods in Bristol has an all-ability trail (see below).
COTSWOLDS In the Cotswolds in Gloucestershire the viewpoint at Dover’s Hill is wheelchair-accessible. From Haresfield Beacon there is access onto Short Wood via a gate with RADAR padlock – superb views can be enjoyed from extensive grasslands.
Visitors with disabilities The National Trust welcomes all visitors to its properties.
Making your visit easier: It is strongly recommended that you contact the property before visiting to ensure it is able to provide the experience you are looking for. It may be advisable to visit on weekdays, when there are fewer visitors and access is easier. The necessary companion of a disabled visitor is admitted free of charge on request, while the normal charge applies to the disabled visitor. NB: Parking is free at most properties, but at some a charge applies to all drivers.
Mobility Vehicles: The use of powered four-wheeled vehicles is offered free of charge at more than 60 properties. The vehicles can either be driven by yourself, by a companion or by a National Trust volunteer. Details of the relevant properties and the vehicle types are in this booklet. It is advisable to phone the property beforehand to check the availability and to book the vehicle. The Trust strongly discourages the use of your own self-drive three-wheeler vehicles, other pavement vehicles and powered wheelchairs at its outdoor properties because of
the uneven and changing terrain. Where possible the Trust admits to its buildings users of powered wheelchairs and similar smaller vehicles, subject to the physical limitations of the building – particularly the limitations of historic buildings – and any other temporary constraints which may apply on the day – please telephone the property in advance to check.
Visitors with Visual impairments: As long as visitors with visual impairments are accompanied, very few properties are unsuitable. Any features that are particularly recommended are indicated by the v symbol in individual property entries in this booklet. An increasing number of properties provide opportunities to touch, but it is advisable to telephone in advance of a visit to check what is on offer. A separate touch list is available in standard or large print, or in Braille on request, and can be obtained from the Access for All Office.
All properties should be able to provide Braille guides, Brailled for us by volunteers. A free copy can be requested to read at home in advance of a visit. Many properties also provide large-print and tape guides; these are mentioned in the individual property
Useful information
Some children’s guides, including a booklet on castles, are also available in Braille.
Visitors with Hearing impairment: The sympathetic Hearing Scheme is now in
operation at many properties. This is a service for visitors with hearing impairment.
Assistance dogs: Although dogs are not admitted to Trust houses, and seldom to gardens and parks, this rule has been largely waived in the case of assistance dogs, so long as they are in harness during their visit. Trainee guide dogs and puppies are also welcome to many outdoor properties, but must, please, be kept under strict control; it is best to telephone the property if any doubt exists.
CAPD facilities: Suitable facilities for kidney patients using CAPD are available at a large number of properties; often the parent and baby room can be used. Please telephone properties ahead of a visit for details.
Cutlery in restaurants: Large-handled cutlery should be available at all Trust tearooms and restaurants. Please ask for this provision if you feel this would be of benefit.
Parking: Although many people have a blue or orange badge it is not a necessary requirement for the use of our designated parking bays. At many properties disabled visitors can be dropped off at the main entrance.
Adapted WCs: Adapted cubicles are unisex unless otherwise stated.
